This post sees us drive through the spectacular Durmitor Mountains from Niksic to Pluzine via: Nevidio Canyon, Tara (Djurdjević) Bridge, Zabljak (Black Lake), Suva Lokva Lake, Stožina Peak, Valovito Jezero Lake, Prevoj Sedlo Mountain Pass, Todorov Do Mountain Pass, Pivska planina Peak, Piva Lake.
This is my favourite drive of the trip so far – just surpassed the twin lake dribe in Northern Macedonia. Wild, alpine, cold, cloudy, high, colourful, rocky and very reminiscent of my drives through Norway and some parts of New Zealand.
The highlight of the drive was the Tara Bridge. The locals say that you have not visited Montenegro if you have not visited the Tara Bridge. It is awesome. It was built between 1937-1940, is 365m long and sits 172m above the Tara River. Just as a point of comparison, Sydney Centrepoint Tower is 309m high and the Eiffel Tower is 330m. Amazing. It was made famous in the 1978 movie “FORCE TEN FROM NAVARONE” starring a very young but already famous Harrison Ford which we watched the night before to get us all excited about our visit today. The Tara River Canyon is also the second deepest in Europe and the deepest in the Balkans.
The highest point of our drive and indeed the trip so far was Prevoj Sedlo Mountain Pass at 1,907m. It was 12C at this place.
Pluzine (Pop 1,341, Elev 740m) is a small town
set against the green-blue Piva Lake and reminds me of Geirangerfjord in
Norway. The descent into Pluzine is nothing short of spectacular and a great way to end this world-class drive.
Enough said, just enjoy the images of this grand drive…
