THE MAIN FEATURE – BULGARIA – NESEBAR (Day 68 covering 56km to 7,692km)

This post sees us drive from Burgas to Nesebar on the Black Sea Coast in Bulgaria to catch a 4hr cruise on the Black Sea followed by a visit to the Old Town of Nesebar.

Nesebar (Pop 13,347, Elev Sea Level, Founded 6th Century BC) is only a 36km drive from Burgas so there was no trouble making the 0930 cruise departure on a 70 foot wooden skip called Cybele 1. There were around 30 other people, mainly English and some locals that journeyed with us. The boat was a good size and not crowded with a central area forward to rear with one huge cushion for sunbathing. The wind was up and we had a 1.2m swell so our distance was limited and we stuck mainly close to the coast. The Black Sea opened up nicely with green-blue colouring and the wind kept us comfortable. We arrived at a cove on the south of Nesebar, which was reasonably calm where we fished and swam. Water was a pleasant 23C and the fishing was a bit of a gimmick. I was not allowed to swim the coast so I circled the boat a few metres out clocking up 630m before they had to move. Lunch followed with BBQ chicken or fish with chips, coleslaw, tomato/cucumber salad and all the beer, wine and softies you could drink – unreal !!!

After getting back at 1330 we toured the Old Town, which is on a little island connected to the mainland. Quite small and quaint but full of shops, restaurants and cafes spread amongst some genuine ruins dating back to 400BC.

The shock of the day was the infamous Sunny Beach, which was overrun with thousands of banana chairs and bathers. Hotels, pubs, cafes, restaurants, bars everywhere accompanied by Pommy accents galore – this was literally the Spanish Costa Del Sol on the Black Sea !!! Hated every minute of it. Would never stay here.

Enjoy the ups and downs of Nesebar…
